Do you ever watch a music video and wonder, “how do they do that? How do they dance and sing and show off their crazy skating moves without falling over?” Roller-skating has been a celebrity sport since Charlie Chaplin, but superstars love to push the limits. Singers like Mariah Carey, Jessica Simpson, and—most recently—Beyoncé have shown off their talents jam skating for music videos. They may have a team of experts teaching them how to skate and dance, but now so do you.
Jam Skating 101
So what exactly is jam skating? It’s as simple as this: dancing on roller-skates. If the first thing to pop into your brain is roller-disco, then you’re right: jam skating started at discos in the 1970’s. It’s come a long way since then, though, using hip-hop, pop, and breakdancing moves to put a skater’s personal flair into their time at the rink. Inspired by both celebrities and local skaters, more and more kids are joining the jam skating movement. Jam skating competitions are cropping up across the country. If you love dancing, gymnastics, or learning new skating skills, it’s time to check out the newest trend in roller-skating.
